Resolute Systems mediator Faustin Pipal addressed the Association of Attorney Mediators (AAM) on September 11, 2018 in Chicago.  Pipal discussed developing a successful mediation practice while maintaining a law practice. Faustin Pipal has mediated over 2,500 cases since beginning his mediation practice in 1993.  He has been litigating cases since 1980, and he draws on his experience as an accomplished trial attorney during the mediation process.  Mr. Pipal concentrates his mediation practice on the resolution of wrongful death, substantial personal injury, construction accidents, trucking accidents, professional malpractice and employment matters.

Dick Devine raises questions in Death Penalty debate

Dick Devine, of counsel in Cozen O’Connor’s Criminal Defense and Internal Investigations practice, offers his insights into the ongoing legislative debates around capital punishment in Illinois. In a guest column published in the June 6 edition of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, the former Cook County State’s Attorney for more than a decade prior to joining Cozen O’Connor, voices his concern that the new standards of proof proposed by the governor in response to the state legislature’s attempt to revive the death penalty will only make the prosecution of capital offenses more difficult and the decision criteria less clear.

Resolute Systems’ mediators swept the 2018 National Law Journal rankings of Midwest mediators, capturing the top three mediator spots, the company announced. Jennifer Duncan-Brice of Resolute’s Chicago office was ranked the number 1 mediator in the Midwest.  Faustin Pipal and Former Lake County Judge Margaret Mullen, also from the Chicago office, were each ranked a Top 3 mediator in the reader survey.  And for the third consecutive year, Resolute Systems was named the top ADR provider in the Midwest in the same rankings.

Chicago Police Department already is controlled by civilians – in City Hall

Dick Devine, Of Counsel in Cozen O’Connor’s Criminal Defense and Internal Investigations practice, shared in Crain’s Chicago Business his concerns over the recent proposal to shake up the organizational structure of the Chicago Police Department.  The proposal is being forwarded by the Grassroots Alliance for Public Accountability.  The Alliance proposes to form a civilian commission to oversee the CPD – adding, as Dick details in his column, a layer of civilian administration and governance without heed to the civilian controls already in place.  Dick provides a provocative insider’s perspective to the matter in the April 11, 2018 issue.  To read the entire piece, click here.

Hon. Margaret Mullen Joins Resolute’s Chicago Panel

Resolute is pleased to welcome Judge Margaret Mullen to its Chicago team of Dispute Resolution Professionals.  Judge Mullen sat in the Lake County Law Division for 14 years, where she presided over civil litigation including personal injury, commercial and insurance coverage matters, as well as administrative review.  She also served as Chief Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit for two years, and also during her career served as the Presiding Judge of the Consolidated Family Division, the Law Division, and the Juvenile Division.  Prior to sitting in the Law Division, Judge Mullen sat in Chancery Court, hearing complex civil litigation. Between 1997 and 2000, she was assigned to Family Court, where she handled dissolution, custody, and parentage matters, from filing to post-decree.

Judge Mullen was active in judicial education at EdCon, presenting seminars on medical malpractice litigation, Supreme Court Rule 213 and Best Tips For Civil Judges. She presented at EdCon again on Medical Malpractice in 2018.

Judge Margaret Mullen retired from 19th Judicial Circuit Court of Lake County, Illinois in December of 2017 after a 25-year judicial career. She sat in the Law Division for 14 years, where she presided over civil litigation including personal injury, commercial and insurance coverage matters, as well as administrative review. During her judicial career, Judge Mullen developed a reputation for resolving cases in the pre-trial mediation process. She is focusing her mediation practice on the resolution of personal injury, professional malpractice, divorce, commercial and insurance coverage matters.
